someone from the band last night left a monstrous unopened can of Jolt Blue on stage. so i drank it today for lunch. bad move. i’m ok with most of the ‘energy drinks’. not this. this is like squirting blue raspberry* concentrate in your mouth and getting a dull electric shock. no, the kind of shock when the cute girl you have a crush on says she’ll go to the winter formal with you. no, more like licking a rusty 6 volt battery.

*did you know that raspberry had a ‘p’ in it? seriosuly. i would’ve gotten that wrong in the spelling bee.

don’t drink this

a few nights ago i met a young woman with two of her children at an assembly for new elementary school string players. she and her daughter were at a table i was at, looking at instruments on display. i struck up a conversation with her, as tired as she looked. in those few moments i learned that she has four children, all younger than 10, and all with special needs. on top of that she’s taking college classes when she can to get a degree in human development & family sciences. it’s that kind of moment where anything you say just feels inadequate. so i gave her a high five and told her she was my hero. i thought & prayed about her the whole hour drive home. she was my ordinary hero.

who’s your ordinary hero?

I am also deeply impressed with NewSpring’s willingness to fail. The fact that failure is an option does not allow for mediocrity, but rather increases the risk/reward continuum.

college ministry thoughts

- i’ve been considering for a couple of weeks now hosting a particular simulcast event for ministry leaders of young adults @ our church. it seems like a sweet thing, but it just doesn’t seem like the time is right for it. instead, i’m going to head to another church that is simulcasting the same event and learning how they do it and see if we can look to do it next year.

- had a great brainstorming time about some events for next fall that could be city-wide and include both our local colleges. i’m really pumped about this.

- getting ready to start our first official college small group!

- are there any readers of this blog who lead a college and/or young adult ministry?

vision

[vision]
do you have it, lack it, need it, want it, lost it, fogot about it, overflowing with it, confused by it?
we should check ourselves, often. do you need to take some time today and seek vision?

proverbs 29:18
where there is no prophetic vision the people cast off restraint, but blessed is he who keeps the law.

seth godin and LAist. thanks to [both] of you for commenting. ps – we need to work on that. i love gap between the two – copmletely different.

godin had a great post on his blog a few days back on reaching the right people, which got me to thinking yesterday. where are we doing this, how is it working, and where should we be doing this? Mark Batterson did this with his newest book Wild Goose Chase (I’m about halfway through – review pending). Are we asking this as a church? How about within specific ministries like youth, children, or young adults?
